More Love Poems to Bernie by Kathryn Velikanje
Deciding (Feb 2013)
I made a decision to date a different sort of man,
one who was sweet and calm and humble,
easily tongue-tied and rarely spoke about himself,
and found he was also responsive, supportive,
encouraging and liked watching sitcoms and movies,
was little boy lively when he danced,
with a smile that melted my heart,
and that I liked cooking for him,
snuggling for hours, holding hands,
and traveling anywhere with him.
From that first email,
I exploded into his universe
and turned it upside down,
for he'd been single 13 years,
yet he seemed to need and like me
as much I needed and liked him,
and we got past taking turns sleeping on the couch,
due to my insufferable snoring,
and worked through my tendency to bolt
rather than talk about whatever bothered me;
and without knowing when it happened,
we became a we.
It is the rare person who likes most of you,
and keeps quiet what they don't,
who lets you do whim and whimsy,
who helps decorate for Christmas
and helps take it down,
who adopts you into his clan
before your first date,
who knows when he hasn't been his cheery self,
who makes everyday
safe and easy and where you want to be.
Exploded (Feb 2013)
An explosion of heart is the best of super novas,
a new planet is born that is your future together,
each treasured moment adding more detail.
It cleans out accumulated fears of too old,
too late, too tired, too weird, and simply too much.
It takes another to validate we are worthwhile.
I know it's not supposed to,
but it's the rare soul who is impervious to others,
especially to love.
Love is all we have when all else is stripped away.
Love is the blue skies under the storm.
Love is the elixir and the balm of life.
Love is the spark that keeps us going when all else fails.
Love is free and yet requires courage, unless you're a child who has yet to know fear.
Love is opening your heart and letting someone in.
Love is being willing to hurt and to gamble.
Love is the riskiest business with the greatest rewards.
Love is what I see in your eyes at bedtime and when I awake.
Love is what has saved me.
