Michigan is located in the midwestern United States in the Great Lakes Region. Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline of any political state in the world - it is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes. In fact, the states consists of two large peninsulas - the Upper and Lower Peninsulas - both of which are surrounded by water. As a result, recreational boating is a large past time in the state during summer months.
The climate of Michigan varies from the Upper to Lower Peninsula. The Lower Peninsula has a mild climate with warm summers and cooler winters. The Upper Peninsula has a more severe climate, marked by short, warm summers and long, very cold winters. Michigan is considered the center of the United States Automobile industry. The city of Detroit, Michigan is the home of the major automobile makers GM, Ford and Chrysler.
